Amazon Prime Video will stream all nine episodes of its upcoming historical drama series BRITANNIA to Amazon Prime members starting Jan. 26, the announcement accompanied by a trailer for the series that documents the Roman Invasion of what would later become Great Britain.

Created by long-time British screenwriter Jez Butterworth (Jerusalem, Spectre), Tom Butterworth and James Richardson, Britannia  is the first between and Sky Atlantic, the series will be considered an Amazon Prime Original in the States and a Sky Original Production in the U.K. and Ireland.

Set in 43 A.D., the series stars Kelly Reilly (True Detective), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Zoë Wanamaker, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Eleanor Worthington-Cox, following the Roman Imperial Army as it tries to crush the fighting spirit of the country then called “Britannia,” as it’s defended by warrior women and Druids who channel the supernatural to battle the invaders.

Clearly, this is Amazon and Sky’s attempt to create a large-scale epic series in the vein of ’s Game of Thrones, although it’s unlikely that Britannia has anywhere close to that hit show’s budget.

Filmed in Prague and Wales, the series was produced by Vertigo Films in association with Neal Street Productions with series EPs being James Richardson from Vertigo, Nicolas Brown from Neal Street Productions (Penny Dreadful), Jez Butterworth and Anne Thomopoulos. Rick McCallum of Star Wars fame produces with Jez and Tom Butterworth acting as lead along with Richard McBrien (Spooks).

You can watch the first trailer for the historic epic below.
