AMERICAN GODS showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are leaving the Starz Neil Gaiman adaptation, Tracking Board has confirmed.
According to Variety, which broke the news, the duo opted to leave the show after reaching “an impasse” on storylines for Season 2 and budget concerns may have been an issue.
It’s unclear how many episodes, if any, of Season 2 is complete, though the writers’ room has been active for several months, since at least August.
Starz boss Chris Albrecht previously said he saw “no end in sight” for the series, which stars Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane.
It had been renewed for a second season in May, not long after its series premiere.
The project is produced by FremantleMedia North America. Fuller and Green executive produced alongside Craig Cegielski, Stefanie Berk, and David Slade, who directed the pilot. Gaiman, who has won Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards for this book, also serves as an executive producer.
