Cable giant HBO has put into development EDISON, a new dark comedy musical from the minds of John Roberts and H. Jon Benjamin, who both provide voices on the popular Fox animated series Bob’s Burgers. They’ll also executive produce alongside Amy Poehler and her Paper Kite banner.
Based on Roberts’ real life, the series will star Roberts and follow him as a middle-aged real estate broker seeking a life in the Big Apple but remains stuck in the town of Edison, New Jersey.
Combining the comedic genius of Roberts and Benjamin, who have both caused hysterics on Burgers, with Poehler, a Saturday Night Live vet and star of Parks and Recreation, is a surefire formula for success. The added element of the series being a musical, which has seen critical success with series like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Galavant, is also a compelling feature.
Brooke Posch, also of Paper Kite, will co-executive produce with Dave Becky of 3 Arts.
The project falls under Paper Kite’s overall deal with Universal Television and their first work with the cable network. It also comes just days after Paper Kite’s Household Name comedy starring Carol Burnett was picked up to pilot by ABC. Currently airing, the production banner also has Broad City and Difficult People.
