Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe have joined the cast of Scorcese’s SILENCE, which centers on Jesuits who take on the dangerous task of bringing Christianity to Japan. Garfield will play the lead, Father Rodrigues, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit who travels to Japan with a fellow priest amid rumors that Rodrigues’ mentor has abandoned the Church. Wantanabe will play the priests’ interpreter.
Producing will be Irwin Winkler, Randall Emmett, George Furla, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Checchi Gori and Barbara DeFina.
Garfield was last in “The Amazing Spider-Man” and is currently reprising his role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”. Watanabe was last seen (in America) in “Inception” and is currently starring in another american remake of “Godzilla”.
