The gestating adaptation of the DC superhero SHAZAM is circling Annabelle 2 director David F. Sandberg to helm comic book movie at New Line Cinema. The movie will introduce the superhero to the DCEU, joining his Justice League comrades Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
Shazam is also known as Captain Marvel — not to be confused with the MCU’s Captain Marvel. Under his alter ego Billy Batson, he can transform into superhero form by saying the words “Shazam!” which gives him the powers of six mythological gods.
The titular role has yet to be cast, but Dwayne Johnson is attached to star as Black Adam in Shazam. He will also star in a standalone Black Adam pic.
Shazam, which is slated for an April 5, 2019 release, joins a robust slate of DCEU movies. Up next is Wonder Woman on June 2, 2017 followed by the Justice League pic on November 17, 2017. The Flash standalone will bow on March 16, 2018 while Aquaman is set to hit theaters on October 5, 2018. Ben Affleck’s Batman pic is expected to be released in 2018 as well. In 2020, we can expect to see a Cyborg movie on April 3 and the release of Green Lantern Corps on July 24.
Sandberg’s involvement with Shazam will continue his relationship with New Line, which released his supernatural thriller Lights Out and his forthcoming sequel Annabelle 2.
