Maybe it’s a coincidence that the day after Sundance announces its 2018 line-up, Focus Features releases the new full-length trailer for their 2017 Sundance pick-up Thoroughbreds. Written and directed by Cory Finley, it was one of the bigger buzz films from the film fest.
It stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) and Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as childhood friends Lily and Amanda who reconnect years after going their separate ways with Lily living an upper-class lifestyle in a Connecticut mansion with her stepfather Mark whom she despises. With the help of a local hustler (Anton Yelchin in one of his last roles), the two girls conspire and plot to kill Mark.
Unlike last month’s teaser-trailer, which focused on the girls acquiring a gun from Yelchin, the new longer trailer gives you a much better idea of the personalities and relationship between the two girls, as well as what a jerk Lily’s stepfather really is.
While I was mixed on the movie when I saw it at Sundance earlier this year, Finley’s script is fantastic, and both the main actresses are very good. Focus has cut an amazing trailer that fully focuses on the film’s dark and somewhat subtle sense of humor, as well as setting up the girl’s motivations better.
You can watch the trailer below and see the full movie when it opens on March 9, 2018.
