FilmNation, the production company behind the highly-anticipated Amy Adams sci-fi drama Arrival, has picked up CIVIL WAR, a spec from screenwriter David Kukoff. FilmNation’s Glen Basner will develop, produce, and finance the feature. Peter Heller of Heller Highwater Productions will also produce.
The script recounts the true story of Gloria Steinem and Phyllis Schlafly’s ideological clash over feminism, and the hypocrisy of their own positions during the proposed 1972 Equal Rights Amendment. Schlafly, a lifelong conservative icon, passed away on Monday at the age of 92.
Basner has been in the process of rebranding FilmNation and he points to Arrival as a representative example of what he expects the company to be going forward. FilmNation’s upcoming releases include The Founder starring Michael Keaton, Miss Sloane with Jessica Chastain, and Gifted with Chris Evans.
Kukoff’s previous credits include several TV movies, including Campus Confidential for ABC Family. He is currently in development with the screenplay to Back to High School, a comedy set up at Warner Bros. based on his own pitch.
