The Billie Jean King biopic, BATTLE OF THE SEXES has tapped Austin Stowell to play the feminist and tennis icon’s husband. The Bridge of Spies actor will star opposite Emma Stone, who will play King.
The dramedy will focus on the famous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match of 1973 when 29-year-old King defeated former 55-year-old former tennis champ, Bobby Riggs. The match proved to set a wave of feminism throughout the country and challenged the norm of gender politics at the time.
The film also stars Steve Carell as Riggs and Andrea Riseborough as Marilyn Barnett, who developed a relationship with King, which forced her to come out as the first openly gay female athlete. Elisabeth Shue has also signed on to star. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are set to direct the script written by Simon Beaufoy. Danny Boyle will produce under his Decibel Films banner alongside Christian Colson of Cloud Eight.
In addition to Bridge of Spies, Stowell was seen in Whiplash and the TV series, Public Morals. He can be seen next in a several films including Stratton, Colossal, and Higher Power.
He is repped by CAA.
