“Avatar” Sequels Give 2024 and 2025 Their First Movie Release Dates

Back in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar was billed as the future of moviegoing. Eight years later, the future is still Avatar, as its four sequels claimed December release dates in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025 this past weekend. If you’re keeping track at home, and  are the first films on Hollywood’s 2024 and 2025 release calendars, which until recently, only went so far as the Untitled Illumination Animated on June 30, 2023. We are truly living in the future, folks!

Taking a closer look at the calendar, will finally hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2020, the same day that Sony releases a mysterious animated movie titled Vivo, which has nothing to do with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Or maybe it does! Who knows?

will lets its Pandora flag fly on Dec. 17, 2021. It currently has the entire year to itself other than Fast & Furious 10 in April 2021 and another animated film from Illumination in July. Those may end up being the only three movies to be released in 2021, since the world will no doubt be busy watching Avatar 2 over and over again until the third installment hits theaters.

After that, you’re going to get a three-year break. Take a vacation! Read a book! But don’t make too many other plans, because before you know it, Avatar 4 will arrive on Dec. 20, 2024, and from there it’s only 364 days until Avatar 5 rewrites the record books on Dec. 19, 2025 — the 28th anniversary of Titanic, Cameron’s previous magnum opus.

I have no idea when Lucasfilm plans to release Star Wars movies in the future, since late December is only big enough for one blockbuster sci-fi franchise at a time. Perhaps Fox and Disney will wage intergalactic war over that lucrative Christmas real estate, since they’ll probably be able to afford multiple spacecrafts by that point. Either way, the Avatar sequels are really happening! Brace yourselves…
