Marvel has finally announced its top choice for DOCTOR STRANGE – Benedict Cumberbatch. You thought that was going another way, didn’t you? Well, apparently Cumberbatch is now in talks to board the sci-fi/fantasy adaptation but he’s been rumored to be circling the role since June, along with Tom Hardy, Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto…and every other eligible leading man on the face of the planet. Anyway, the project centers on Dr. Stephen Strange, a young, arrogant surgeon with a promising career, who loses his ability to operate after a terrible accident. Despondent and suicidal, Dr. Strange seeks advice from a mystical being known as the Ancient One and learns that he is the newly designated Sorceror Supreme, responsible for protecting the planet from evil. With his girlfriend Clea and his loyal assistant Wong in tow, Strange sets out to fulfill his destiny. Derrickson is directing the film from a script penned by Jon Spaihts.
Cumberbatch is already a member of a number of big franchises, including The Hobbit franchise and the re-booted Star Trek franchise. He will next be leading the Penguins of Madagascar franchise for Dreamworks and is getting a lot of attention for his role as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. His upcoming projects also include the Whitey Bulger crime drama Black Mass and Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book: Origins.
