Christmas has arrived early this year with Miramax and Broad Green Pictures announcing that BAD SANTA 2 will begin shooting next year. The sequel to the 2003 dark comedy starred Billy Bob Thornton who is set to return. The flick also starred Tony Cox, Lauren Graham, and the late Bernie Mac and John Ritter.
“We’ve been waiting far too long to see Billy Bob’s Willie Soke mess with the holiday season in his own unique way,” said the official statement out of Miramax.
The original film follows a conman and his partner as they post as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. They run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled child and the security boss discovers the plan. Plot details for the second installment are under wraps.
Terry Zwigoff directed the first installment but it is unlikely he will return for the second film having had negative things to say about sequels in general in the past. Doug Ellin and Steve Pink were both previously in talks to helm the feature. No director or writer was named in the press release. There is also no word on if Tony Cox or Lauren Graham will return.
David Thwaites will oversee the project for Miramax and Victor Moyers for Broad Green. The dark holiday comedy is set to begin production early next year and hit theaters the following Christmas season.
