Bold Gets Into The Superhero Game With Pick Up Of Spec “Samaritan”

Bold Films is jumping into the superhero fray with their pick up of SAMARITAN, written by Bragi Schut Jr.

Samaritan will be an in-house affair, with Bold producing and financing the film. Chairman Michel Litvak and SVP Jonathan Oakes will produce while CEO Gary Michael Walters will executive produce.

The spec is set two decades after an epic battle left a city’s super villain dead and a superhero missing, a young boy befriends an old man who he believes is the hero in hiding. But the truth he discovers is more shocking than he could have ever imagined.

The story has been described as Unbreakable meets Finding Forrester. The staggering success of Fox’s Deadpool, a genre bending superhero flick with a relatively low budget, may have given Bold the confidence to finance the spec themselves. Other recent superhero treatments such as Netflix’s Jessica Jones show that audiences will flock to strong character driven content with superpowers subtly folded into the narrative.

Bold is known for their intense character driven dramas such as DriveNightcrawler and Whiplash. They are currently in pre- on Stronger, about the hunt for the 2013 Boston Marathon bombers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Given their history, Samaritan seems like a solid fit.

Bragi F. Schut created the 2005 CBS sci-fi series Threshold and scripted the 2011 Nicolas Cage actioner Season of the Witch.

Schut is repped by Verve and Realm Entertainment.
