Boots Riley’s debut SORRY TO BOTHER YOU was one of the more buzzworthy talked-about films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, so of course, I missed it. Regardless, the comedy was picked up by Annapurna Pictures and Riley signed to WME, and a first trailer has already been released even though the movie won’t hit theaters until the summer.
It’s one of three Oakland-based comedies that played at Sundance this year, this one starring Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out) as Cassius Green, a down-on-his-luck Oakland native who gets involved in the world of telemarketing.
The film co-stars Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Patton Oswalt, Steven Yeun, Terry Crews, David Cross, Danny Glover, Omari Hardwick, Marcella Bragio,Tom Woodruff Jr., Kate Berlant, Jermaine Fowler, Robert Longstreet and Teresa Navarro.
The official synopsis is:
In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.
Sorry to Bother You hits theaters on July 6, and you can see for yourself if the Sundance hype is to be believed. (I’m definitely bummed I missed it after watching the trailer.)
