Matt Charman, the writer behind Spielberg’s latest Bridge of Spies (see Wil Loper’s review here), is switching to producing on his next film, BATTLE FOR ALCATRAZ. The film is based on the true story of the three day battle at the infamous federal prison, in which six inmates attempted escape and a full blown battle ensued, leading to five deaths, and a dozen injuries. Two of the surviving inmates were later executed.
In addition to the Spielberg film, Charman also wrote Suite Francaise starring Michelle Williams and Margot Robbie, and the psychological-thriller miniseries Black Work.
Neil Widener and Gavin James, who previously penned Verona, will take over writing duties based on Charman’s pitch.
The project is set up at Paramount with Grandview and being overseen by Daniele Bernfeld. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones is producing.
CAA packaged the project, repping Charman, Widener, and James. Charman is repped in the UK by Independent Talent Group.
