Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig’s long-gestating WINCHESTER starring Helen Mirren has landed at CBS Films. The studio has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for the drama from Bullitt Entertainment and Diamond Pictures.
The Spierigs wrote the screenplay with Tom Vaughn which was based on the true story of the firearm heiress Sarah Winchester, who will be played by Mirren. Winchester was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester rifle. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she obsessed over the construction of an enigmatic mansion (later to be known as the Winchester Mansion) designed to keep the evil spirits at away. Many were skeptical of her condition, but after an evaluation, it turned out that she may not have been insane after all.
Brett Tomberlin from Imagination Design Works will produce alongside Tim McGhan of Blacklab Entertainment. Bullitt’s Benedict Carver, Diamond’s Daniel Diamond and Tobin Armbrust will serve as executive producers along with Andy Trapani, Toni Lianos, Brian Gilbert, Marc Shipper and Simon Oakes. Production is slated to start in March in San Jose and Australia.
