Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson have been confirmed as the two leads of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. The story follows a virgin (Johnson) who signs her life over to an alluring entrepreneur (Hunnam) with a severe sexual appetite for bondage, sadism and dominatrix. If you want to know how subtle and nuanced the story will be, look no further than Hunnam’s character’s name, Christian Grey, and Johnson’s character’s name, Anastasia Steele. Perhaps this movie will bring about another era of erotic thrillers that were so abundant in the 90’s, only less adult and more neutered.
Kelly Marcel (“Saving Mr. Banks”) is writing the script that Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”) will direct. Producing will be author EL James, James Schamus, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti.
Hunnam was last seen in this summer’s “Pacific Rim” and will be seen soon in “Triple Nine.” He’ll also be reunited with Guillermo Del Toro in “Crimson Peak.” Johnson appeared in the “21 Jump Street” remake and “The Five-Year Engagement.” She’s also recently snatched up roles in “Cymbeline” and “Need for Speed.”
Hunnam and Johnson are repped by CAA and WME respectively.
