Chiwetel Ejiofor In Talks To Join Rooney Mara In “Mary Magdalene”



The cast for Garth Davis’s MARY MAGDALENE is starting to take shape with some major talents. is the latest name being thrown into the mix to play Peter, one of Jesus’s 12 apostles.

The Academy Award-nominated actor would join Rooney Mara, who is set to play the titular Mary Magdalene, and Joaquin Phoenix, who will portray Jesus.

The film will follow Magdalene, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ who is believed to have witnessed his crucifixion and resurrection. She developed a reputation during the Middle Ages as being a prostitute, though none of the Gospels support that description. The role of Peter is a key role in the New Testament not only because he was the lead apostle, but because he was with Jesus during events witnessed only by a few apostles.

Davis is directing the script penned by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman from See-Saw Films will serve as producers. Universal and Focus will release the film internationally and The Weinstein Company will release domestically.

Ejiofor came into the spotlight as one of Hollywood’s most gifted actors after his stellar performance in 12 Years a Slave. He has since appeared in a string of high profile pics including The Martian, Secret in Their Eyes, and Triple 9. He can be seen next in Marvel’s Doctor Strange opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.
