Though announced to be in talks in late May, Chris Pine has now officially closed a deal to star as love interest to Gal Gadot in WONDER WOMAN. The pic marks the first solo outing for the Amazonian warrior turned superheroine after the character makes her debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which bows in 2016.
Warner Bros will release Wonder Woman in 2017 and though plot details remain under wraps, the pic will follow Gadot’s Diana Prince and will introduce Pine’s Steve Trevor. In the comics, Trevor is an an intelligence officer in the US Air force who becomes stranded on Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons. After being nursed back to health by princess Diana, the two return to the US, where she becomes a superhero. Trevor has consistently served as Wonder Woman’s primary love interest throughout the years, however sources say that Pine won’t just be pining for the lasso-wielding Diana of Themyscira, but will also get in on the action.
Patty Jenkins is directing, based on a script from Pan scribe Jason Fuchs. Pine was initially rumored to be up for a role in Green Lantern Corps, but that’s clearly been debunked. Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are producing the blockbuster, along with Charles Roven and Richard Suckle of Atlas Entertainment.
Before he knocks bracelets with Wonder Woman, Pine will reprise his role as James Tiberius Kirk in Star Trek Beyond, which hits screens next year. He’ll also go sailing in the shipwreck thriller The Finest Hours, where he’ll lead alongside Casey Affleck and Ben Foster. Pine most recently appeared opposite fellow DC’er Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) in apocalyptic thriller Z for Zachariah.
