Common will join Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton, and Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco in the upcoming Iraq war drama, LEAVEY, about veteran Megan Leavey and her combat canine Rex. LD Entertainment is producing, from a script by Pamela Gray with Gabriela Cowperthwaite set to direct.
The film is based on the true story of Megan Leavey who worked in the K9 unit in Iraq. She worked with military combat dog Rex, who together saved countless lives from 2004-2006 searching for roadside bombs. After she was wounded in combat she received a Purple Heart and was discharged, however Rex remained on active duty. After a five year fight, Leavey was able to adopt Rex and bring him home.
The Tracking Board exclusively reported Mara’s involvement in the project back in July.
Common will play Sgt. Gunney Massey, the Gunnery Sergeant in charge of the kennels at Camp Pendleton. He will next be seen in Suicide Squad alongside Will Smith and John Wick 2 with Keanu Reeves.
