Community star and comedian Joel McHale as signed on to guest star on Fox’s forthcoming revival of THE X-FILES. The limited-series return was announced back in March, with classic leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to star. Original series creator Chris Carter is scripting the six new episodes of the event series, as well as executive producing. McHale will play anchor Tad O’Malley, who hosts a popular conservative Internet news show and eventually becomes a surprising ally for Agent Mulder (Duchovny).
The series will premiere on Jan. 24, 2016. Fox has entertained the possibility of anther subsequent season depending on the revival’s success. Recurring series favorites Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis will return, who portrayed FBI assistant director Walter Skinner and the villainous Cigarette Smoking Man, respectively. The iconic cult series ran from 1993 to 2002, followed by a film in 1998 and its sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, in 2008.
McHale just recently wrapped up the sixth season of cult comedy series Community, which moved to Yahoo after cancellation on NBC. He also appeared in a supporting stint in last summer’s horror outing Deliver Us From Evil, opposite Eric Bana and Olivia Munn. He’ll next star in the drama The Tribe, written and directed by Nebraska scribe Bob Nelson.
