The Conjuring 3New Line

New Line has begun developing yet another sequel to The Conjuring, and really, can you blame the studio at this point for giving audiences what they want? With nearly $900 million in combined worldwide grosses between the first two Conjuring films and the spinoff Annabelle, you can bet New Line has been eager to move on a new installment in the fright franchise, and to that end, they’ve hired  to write , the Tracking Board has confirmed.

Though plot details are being kept under wraps, The Conjuring 3 will be based on another real case file from paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, which mean you can safely expect Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga to reprise their roles.

, however, will not return to direct this time around, opting instead to simply produce alongside . Wan is moving on to bigger and (hopefully) better things with WB’s Aquaman movie, an opportunity he received as a direct result of killing it for the studio with the hugely successful Conjuring universe, which as of this writing (it could change any minute) also includes a pair of Annabelle movies and two more spinoffs based on The Nun and The Crooked Man.

That’s seven movies! And The Conjuring came out less than four years ago!

Listen, you know how I feel about this franchise. As much as I like Wan and want to support the horror genre, I’m just not a fan, though I fully acknowledge that I’m in the critical minority there. That said, surely Wan saw how his Saw franchise grew a bit stale after seven films, so here’s hoping he finds a filmmaker who’s eager to shake things up a bit rather than be content making another traditional haunted house movie. These films are starting to repeat themselves a little bit, and I’d like to see them play it more edgy than safe.

The next installment in the Conjuring universe, Annabelle: Creation, hits theaters on Aug. 11, and early word from critics is that it’s better than the first film, a la the Ouija franchise. Unfortunately, I’m a Chucky loyalist, so I’ll never know whether the almighty Tomatometer is right about that one.

News of The Conjuring 3 was first reported by Deadline.
