The sequel to the massively successful CREED is slowly becoming a reality as MGM is circling a release date of November 2017. The spin-off of the Rocky franchise was a hit among audiences and critics and earned Sylvester Stallone his first Golden Globe win as Rocky Balboa, a role which earned him a nomination in 1976 for the first Rocky.
Creed follows the rise of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), son of Apollo Creed, a role originated by Carl Weathers in the first installment of the franchise. Stallone said that a potential storyline of the sequel would have a Godfather 2 structure to it where it would be set in the past and present, with Weathers coming in to reprise his role as Apollo.
It is unclear whether or not director Ryan Coogler will return. The Fruitvale Station director was recently confirmed to direct Marvel’s Black Panther which is slated for a 2018 release date. This may conflict with the filming of the Creed sequel. Stallone did suggest, however, that he may keep Coogler on as an executive producer for the film.
