Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming TNT series THE ALIENIST has landed A-list actor Dakota Fanning as its star. Based on the international best-seller from Caleb Carr, Fanning will join Daniel Bruhl and Luke Evans in the drama.
Fanning will play a headstrong secretary named Sara Howard in what is described as a psychological thriller. The series is set in gritty 1896 New York City, it is the Gilded Age — a time of wealth, extreme poverty, and technological innovation. When a series of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes grips the city, newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt calls upon criminal psychologist (aka alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Bruhl) and newspaper reporter John Moore (Evans) to conduct the investigation in secret. They’re aided by a makeshift crew of characters, among them the intrepid Howard, a young secretary on Roosevelt’s staff who is determined to become the first female police detective in New York City. Using the emerging disciplines of psychology and early forensic investigation techniques, this band of social outsiders tracks down one of the city’s first serial killers.
Black Mirror‘s Jakob Verbruggen has been tapped to direct and executive produce the project, a co-production between Paramount TV and Turner’s Studio T. Fukunaga will serve as executive producer alongside Eric Roth, Hossein Amini, as well as Steve Golin and Rosalie Swedlin from Anonymous Content. Production is slated to begin soon in Budapest, Hungary with a premiere later this year.
Fanning’s last major TV role ws in 2002 with the mini-series Taken. She recently starred in the Ewan McGregor-directed American Pastoral and has since appeared in numerous films and can be seen next in a whole slate of films including Ocean’s Eight and Please Stand By. She will also star and produce an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar directed by Kirsten Dunst.
