The role was previously offered to Ryan Gosling, who turned it down.
Stevens joins Emma Watson as Belle and Luke Evans as Gaston, who’s casting was announced earlier today, in this re-imagining of Disney’s beloved 1991 animated film, which was in itself based on the classic French fairytale.
With the success of last year’s Malificent, a live action imagining of the characters in Sleeping Beauty, Disney is launching a series of live-action films adapting their classic fairytale films, continuing with Cinderella being released later this year and an upcoming Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau.
Stevens is known for his roles in Downton Abbey and The Guest. He can next be seen in the upcoming crime drama Criminal Activities.
Stevens is repped by WME.
