You’ve probably seen Daniel Craig before, but I’m pretty sure you’ve never seen him quite like this. The “Bond, James Bond” star plays Joe Bang in Steven Soderbergh’s LOGAN LUCKY, and the character is so different than anything Craig has done before that the actor merits an “and introducing” credit in the first trailer for this star-studded heist movie.
Channing Tatum and Adam Driver play Jimmy and Clyde Logan, two brothers who attempt to reverse a family curse by pulling off an elaborate heist during a legendary NASCAR race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Oscar winner Hilary Swank co-stars alongside Riley Keough, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes, Katherine Waterston, Sebastian Stan, Brian Gleeson, Jack Quaid, Macon Blair and Dwight Yoakam.
Rebecca Blunt wrote the script, while Tatum and Reid Carolin produced the film with Mark Johnson and Soderbergh’s longtime collaborator Gregory Jacobs.
Soderbergh previously swore off directing feature films and had been focused on the Cinemax series The Knick before coming out of “retirement” for this redneck robbery movie, which looks like Ocean’s 11’s hillbilly cousin.
Seriously though, this movie looks like a blast, and it should provide a strong end to the summer movie season when it speeds into theaters on Aug. 18.
The film caught a huge break when Sony moved Baby Driver up from August to June, so we’ll see if it can capitalize of the move. August appears wide open for the taking, and if anyone can pull it off, it’s Soderbergh and Bleecker Street, which elbowed its way into the Oscar race the past two years with acting nominations for Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo). They know what they’re doing, so let’s just hope their collective “luck” hasn’t run out.
