It’s been less than three months since filmmaker David Ayer and his Cedar Park partner Chris Long set up shop, and the new indie studio has optioned the rights to the political drama COINTELPRO.
Written by writing partners Leon Hendrix and Ajani Jackson, the script is set in 1960s Chicago and deals with a political campaign to tear apart the Civil Rights movement from the inside. It’s named after the FBI’s rogue spy operation set to target progressive political activists.
Long and Ayer will produce the film through Cedar Park, the company’s second project after the mob drama Family Crimes for Starz, which Ayer is writing. Cedar Park also bought the rights to Stephen King’s narrative poem The Bone Church with plans to turn it into a drama series.
Cedar Park is repped by CAA as is Hendrix, who wrote the Black List script The White Devils. Hendrix is also repped by Grandview, while his writing partner is repped by Tash Moseley Management.
The news was first reported on by the Hollywood Reporter.
