British-born actor David Oyelowo has become fairly notorious about picking his roles wisely, and who can blame him? He killed it in Ava Duvernay’s Selma, playing Martin Luther King, Jr. in 2014, and many feel he was robbed of an Oscar nomination. (He did get a Golden Globe nod and has received accolades for his performance in the HBO movie Nightingale.)
Either way, he’s kept fairly busy, and he’s now the latest actor to join the cast of Lionsgate and Doug Liman’s sci-fi adventure CHAOS WALKING, the Tracking Board confirms. The movie already includes Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mad Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir and Nick Jonas among its illustrious cast.
Oyelowo will play Aaron, another one of the film’s antagonists along with Mikkelsen’s Mayor Prentiss. Aaron’s a militant figure in the New World, a distant planet that has been struck by a debilitating virus called “The Noise” that turns one’s thoughts into visions and has been driving the inhabitants of New World mad.
Based on the novel by award-winning author Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls), the movie follows Holland’s hero Todd, who discovers that a girl named Viola (Ridley) might be the answer to unlocking New World’s secrets, but first, they must escape to a planet that isn’t affected by “The Noise.”
Ness adapted the book along with Charlie Kaufman,Lindsey Beer, Gary Spinelli and John Lee Hancock with Allison Shearmur, Erwin Stoff and Doug Davison producing.
Currently, the movie is scheduled for a March 1, 2019 release by Lionsgate.
Following Selma, Oyelowo starred in Disney’s The Queen of Katwe and A United Kingdom, both which premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival with A United Kingdom being picked up and released by Fox Searchlight earlier this year. Oyelowo has finished filming Only You, a film for Blumhouse, on which he’s also an exec. producer. He also starred in the next yet-unnamed Cloverfield movie (formerly called God Particle), which will be released by Paramount on Feb. 2, 2018. He’s also in Gringo, director Nash Edgerton’s ensemble film co-starring his brother Joel Edgerton, Charlize Theron, Sharlto Copley and Thandie Newton. That is scheduled for a release by Amazon Studios and STXFilms on March 9.
