A-list producer and writer David S. Goyer is set to bring Drew Magary’s fantastical THE HIKE to the small screen. IMG Global Television optioned the book while the Man of Steel screenwriter will executive produce the project which has been described as Cormac McCarthy’s Alice in Wonderland with elements of The Phantom Tollbooth mixed with a game of Dungeons & Dragons.
Published earlier this year, The Hike blends fantasy, folklore, and tropes from video games. The absurdist adventure centers around a family man who takes a walk into the woods of rural Pennsylvania, finding himself lost with only “The Path” to guide him – a mysterious gauntlet populated by dog-faced men, sentient clouds of smoke, and a caustic talking crab that may be his only chance to getting back to his loved ones.
“Needless to say, this isn’t your typical fantasy adventure tale,” IM Global Television President Mark Stern said in a statement. “As wild as it is, however, Drew’s ability to tap into deeply emotional themes makes this completely engrossing.”
The project is under Goyer’s recently-signed first-look deal with IM Global TV. Kevin Turen has also signed on as executive producer. Magary is set to adapt the TV adaptation.
This is Goyer’s third project in development at IM Global TV. He is also working on the sci-fi drama I, Rebel as well as a seasonal anthology series which has the working title Golden State. On the film side of things Goyer wrote and executive produced Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and penned The Dark Knight Rises.
He is repped by WME.
