Netflix comedy THE RANCH has tapped Dax Shepard to join the series in a recurring guest starring role in the upcoming third season. The news comes a few months after Danny Masterson was dropped from the show following rape accusations in December.
Shepard will play Luke Matthews, a former soldier who has come to Garrison with some history concerning the Iron River Ranch. There, he meets the Bennetts and forms an immediate bond with Colt (Kutcher) and Beau (Sam Elliott), but Luke’s past has a way of catching up with him.
The announcement is fitting for the family sitcom as the show is basically filling Masterson’s role with someone else Kutcher has a strong friendship with outside of the show. Kutcher and Masterson starred on That 70’s Show together along with Kutcher’s wife, actor Mila Kunis. Kunis is a longtime friend of Shepard’s wife, Kristen Bell, having starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bad Moms, and Bad Moms 2 together.
This is Shepard’s second TV casting this spring. Last week he signed on to star and executive produce Bless This Mess. He’ll star with Lake Bell and the show is created by Liz Meriwether. The Ranch is in second position to Bless This Mess, but if it were not to receive a series order he would be available for a larger role on The Ranch. Shepard is represented by WME.
