DC’s Shazam is already expanding into its own franchise with plans for a spinoff centering on supervillain BLACK ADAM in the works. In addition to producing, Dwayne Johnson will star in the title role.
Black Adam was originally created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in 1945 as a one-shot villain for The Marvel Family comic book before later moving to DC Comics as a recurring character in the 1970s. He is a major antagonist for the character Captain Marvel and occasional antihero.
New Line announced plans for Shazam back in 2014 with Johnson to star and Darren Lemke to write the script. Johnson will produce both Shazam and Black Adam alongside Hiram Garcia. A writer and director have not been named for the spinoff.
Johnson has had a busy year that saw him star in HBO’s Ballers and in production on the Jumanji sequel and Baywatch feature which are both due out later this year.
