The series centers on single parent Sheila Gable, her father, and five offbeat kids as they try to survive life on a shoestring budget in a Midwestern town. The show is a rare comedy in Berlanti’s slate, which has been DC-focused in recent years with four actioners at The CW, in addition to the upcoming Riverdale at CW and Blindspot in its second season at NBC. This show is the beginning of a bigger half-hour push from the company this pilot season.
Berlanti president Sarah Schechter brought in the project after becoming a fan while watching the original series from Channel 4. It was created and written by Caitlin and Caroline Moran, based on their childhood experiences.
Cody, who will also a producer on the series, is no stranger to the television world. While she is better known for her collaborations with Jason Reitman such as Juno, which she won an Oscar, and Young Adult, she previously created United States of Tara for Showtime and the new Amazon series One Mississippi. She most recently penned the feature dramedy Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Rick Springfield.
