UPDATED 4.13.16: After previously releasing a shortlist back in January, Disney and Lucasfilm narrowed down their top picks for the lead role in the UNTITLED HAN SOLO SPINOFF to Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Reynor, and Taron Egerton. Now, those close to the casting process have suggested at Ehrenreich has emerged as a favorite based on his performance in a London screen test.
All three of the shortlisted actors had a test, though due to the high level of secrecy with the project, there is a possibility a few other names are still in contention.
The film, known by its code name Project Red Cup, will be directed by The Lego Movie‘s Christopher Miller and Phil Lord and is scheduled for release in 2018. Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but the film is expected to follow the adventures of a young Han Solo. Disney has confirmed that Solo’s furry sidekick Chewbacca will appear in the film, spurring speculation that the story will detail how the two first met.
Ehrenreich is best known for appearing in the Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar! as fictional western star Hobie Doyle and recently worked on Yellow Birds with Jack Huston and Toni Collette. He is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Reynor previously starred in Transformers: Age Of Extinction and Macbeth. He is repped by WME and Macfarlane Chard Associates in Ireland.
Egerton burst on the scene in last year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and can currently be seen in theaters opposite Hugh Jackman in Eddie the Eagle. He is also set for the title role in Robin Hoods: Origins for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. He is repped by CAA and United Agents in the UK.
