Disney’s “Nutcracker” Adds Ballerina Misty Copeland To Cast

is about to become the newest Disney princess — princess ballerina, that is!

Based on the 1816 story  by E.T.A. Hoffmann, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King tells the tale of Marie (Clara in the Alexandre Dumas adaptation and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet), a young girl who, at midnight on Christmas Eve, is transported to a magical realm full of nutcracker princes, gingerbread soldiers, an an army of mice.

Disney is producing the live-action film, titled , with a script from Ashleigh Powell and Lasse Hallstrom attached to direct.

Lindy Goldstein is executive producing the film, and Mark Gordon is producing. Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman will oversee the film for Disney, while Sara Smith is acting as overseer for The Mark Gordon Company.

Copeland announced her involvement with the project in a post on Instagram this morning:

Copeland will play the principal ballerina role in the main dance sequence of the story. She made history as the first African-American woman to be promoted to principal dancer with American Ballet Theater. Her story has been the subject of a documentary, A Ballerina’s Tale, and a memoir, Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina.
