Academy Award-nominated producer Mary Parent will head up the newly created position of Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production at Legendary. Legendary Entertainment Chairman & CEO Thomas Tull announced today that Parent will oversee all aspects of the company’s film, television, digital, mobile and new media development and production activities.
Jon Jashni, former Legendary President/CCO, exited the company earlier in the week to found Raintree Ventures, creating an opportunity for new leadership to come aboard. In addition, Thursday’s shuffle will see the head of Television and Digital Media division, Bruce Rosenblum, exit the company as well.
“Mary has proven to be the rare individual that has not just served as an executive and a producer,” said Tull, “but someone who has done both with tremendous success. Her creative instincts, relationships and an innate ability to put together a production slate designed for a global audience that is also based on savvy financial understanding are qualities we will rely on greatly as we enter the next phase of Legendary’s growth.”
Legendary, which was acquired by China’s Dalian Wanda Group in January for $3.5 billion – the largest deal between China and Hollywood to date – is in a transitional phase, during which the company intends to extend its global reach through tent-pole blockbusters in addtion to internationally-oriented television and digital series.
Parent, who was the founder and CEO of the incredibly successful production shingle Disruption Entertainment, recently received an Oscar nomination as the producer of this year’s Best Picture contender The Revenant. Among Disruption’s credits include Pacific Rim, Godzilla, The Spongebob Movie. She is also in production with Kong: Skull Island for Legendary. Parent was also leading the charge of the 90’s Nicktoons movie that is in development at Paramount.
“I have loved being solely a producer, but sometimes an opportunity so unique presents itself, you have to jump in with both feet,” Parent said following Tull’s announcement. “The chance to be a part of building a truly global business with Legendary, in a climate where content is becoming ubiquitous regardless of the distribution platform or the origin of audiences, is just that opportunity. Plus, having worked closely with everyone at Legendary these past four years, I have come to know the vision they have for the future and I’m so excited that Thomas has invited me to be a part of it.”
Parent previously served as CEO and Chairman of Worldwide Production for MGM and Vice Chairman of Worldwide Production at Universal.
Legendary’s upcoming slate includes the Duncan Jones-directed Warcraft, as well as the Matt Damon thriller The Great Wall. Their television projects include the SyFy series The Expanse, USA’s Colony, and Netflix’s Love.
