Nine months after exiting The Flash due to creative differences, Rick Famuyiwa is in negotiations to direct the martial arts movie SON OF SHAOLIN for Sony, the Tracking Board has confirmed.
Based on the graphic novel by Jay Longino and Caanan White, Son of Shaolin is a modern-day kung fu epic that combines Shaolin mythology with urban gentrification. The story follows a struggling teenage street artist who discovers he’s the last of a special bloodline and he’s being hunted by a merciless killer.
Dwayne Johnson is producing with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Entertainment banner. Longino will serve as an executive producer. Sony executives Matt Milam and Maia Eyre will oversee the project for the studio.
Johnson and the studio considered Famuyiwa a strong fit for the material based on his acclaimed indie Dope, which also featured a teenage ensemble. He recently directed the HBO movie Confirmation starring Kerry Washington as Anita Hill.
Famuyiwa is represented by WME and Oasis Media Group. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
