Former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson is returning to his roots as he is in the works on a wrestling comedy with WWE head writer Brian Gewirtz and Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions. The project has received a put pilot commitment from Fox.
The untitled series is a fictional behind-the-scenes look at professional wrestling that chronicles the one-of-a-kind odd couple relationship that develops between a charismatic young character and a painfully awkward comedy writer who is new to the world of wrestling. It will be a single-cam, hour-long comedy series.
Johnson and Gewirtz are executive producing the project with Seven Bucks Productions’ Dany Garcia and Gary Sanchez’s Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Kevin Messick. 20th Century Fox TV is the studio.
Johnson has been on a roll lately, starring in the hit action comedy Central Intelligence with Kevin Hart and the highly anticipated features Baywatch and Moana. He currently stars in HBO’s Ballers, which recently received an order for season three, and released a new YouTube channel.
Rock is repped by WME.
