Deadpool star Ed Skrein has been tapped for the big screen adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. The sci-fi action pic will be directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron.
Like he did in Deadpool, Skrein will play the main villain, Zapan, a cyborg who is in possession of a weapon called the Damascus blade. He will join the cast that includes Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, and Jackie Earl Haley. Cameron is also set to produce the movie for Fox alongside his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau. Production is slated to start in October.
The film, set in the 26th century, tells the story of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.
Skrein also starred in The Transporter Refeuled and appeared in HBO’s Game of Thrones. He can be seen next in the thriller In Darkness opposite Natalie Dormer and Emily Ratajkowski.
