Stephen Frears’ feature VICTORIA AND ABDUL has added Bollywood actor Ali Fazal and Eddie Izzard. Fazal will play the titular Abdul opposite Judi Dench’s Victoria, while Izzard will play Bertie, the Prince of Wales.
The film tells the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable rule. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.
Also joining the project are Tim Pigott-Smith as King Charles III and Adeel Akhtar.
The project is set up at Working Title with a script from Lee Hall. It is based on the book by Victoria & Abdul: The True Story Of The Queen’s Closet Confidant. It was developed by Cross Street Films’ Beeban Kidron and Hall with BBC Films. Kidron, Tracey Seaward, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner all produce. Focus is handling worldwide rights and will release the film domestically. Universal Pictures International will handle world distribution.
Fazal previously was seen in Fast 7, For Here Or To Go, and Bobby Jasoos. Izzard, who won two Emmy awards for Eddie Izzard: Dressed To Kill, will next be seen in Whisky Galore and is lending his voice to the feature Rock Dog.
