Up-and-coming director Elizabeth Banks is in discussions to direct YA fantasy RED QUEEN as her sophomore effort. The prolific actress and producer recently made her directorial debut with Universal’s Pitch Perfect 2, a hit that has gone on to make $250.8 million worldwide.
Red Queen is also at Universal, an adaptation of the series penned by budding scribe Victoria Aveyard, which has been favorably described as a blend of Hunger Games, X-Men, Game of Thrones and Cinderella. Breaking Bad writer Gennifer Hutchison scripted the fairytale, which is set in a world where social classes are divided by the color of their blood, one magical and one ordinary, and a young girl must disguise herself as a long lost princess and aid a revolution in order to save her family.
Jake Weiner, Chris Bender and JC Spink of Benderspink are producing, along with Pouya Shabazian and Christopher Cosmos.
Banks is no stranger to the YA genre, having appeared throughout the entire Hunger Games series as fan-favorite Effie Trinket. Banks will next appear in the final Hunger Games chapter, Mockingjay: Part 2, the stripper comedy sequel Magic Mike XXL, and return for Sony’s sequel to the hit animated comedy The Lego Movie.
She’ll also produce and reprise her role in Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3, with a possibility of directing as well.
The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
