Adria Arjona is circling the Melissa McCarthy-led comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY from New Line Cinema. Arjona, who will star in NBC’s upcoming take on The Wizard of Oz, Emerald City, would join previously cast Gillian Jacobs, Jacki Weaver, Molly Gordon, and Maya Rudolph. McCarthy co-wrote the script with Ben Falcone, who will also direct.
The storyline for the project is being kept under wraps, but it is being described as a broad fish-out-of-water comedy in a college setting, cut from the same cloth as the Rodney Dangerfield classic Back to School.
McCarthy and Falcone are producing through their On the Day Productions with Chris Henchy of Gary Sanchez Productions. Michael Disco and Sam Brown are executive producing for New Line along with David Siegel. Warner Bros. will distribute.
If she does sign on to Life of the Party, it would be Arjona’s first foray into a major comedy project. Arjona recently appeared in the critically acclaimed Netflix series Narcos after landing a recurring role in the second season of HBO’s True Detective. She recently wrapped on The Belko Experiment, a thriller from writer-producer James Gunn. In 2017, Arjona will star as Dorothy Gale in the highly-anticipated NBC drama Emerald City, a dark reimagining of the “Land of Oz” tale by L. Frank Baum. The series is slated to premiere as part of NBC’s mid-season schedule.
Ghostbusters star McCarthy and her husband Falcone recently saw their latest collaboration, The Boss, hit theaters with modest box office success, though it fell flat with critics. Filming on Life of the Party is expected to start this week in Atlanta.
