Emma Thompson and Kevin Kline have signed on to play two iconic characters in the new live-action adaptation of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Thompson has been cast as the lovely Mrs. Potts while Kline will play Maurice, Belle’s father.
The film will be a live-action remake of the 1991 animated Disney classic by the same name. This version will also be a musical, keeping the original’s beloved musical numbers intact. Thompson and Kline will be joining Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Josh Gad as Le Fou.
Bill Condon will helm the picture from a script written by Stephen Chbosky. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Films will produce.
The project coincides with Disney’s current streak of producing live-action remakes of their classic animated titles. Thus far, we’ve seen Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and this year’s Cinderella. Also, a Jon Favreau-directed live-action Jungle Book is in production and a live-action Little Mermaid has been in discussions.
