Emma Watson is set to star in James Ponsoldt’s thriller THE CIRCLE. She joins Tom Hanks in the story following a young woman who is hired to work for an internet monopoly that specializes in controlling a singular online identity for each person, rendering privacy obsolete.
Watson will play the aforementioned woman, who begins working at the Circle, which links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing, and meets a mysterious older man (Hanks). Ponsoldt also wrote the script, based on the 2013 bestselling novel by Dave Eggers. Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander was attached for the role in May, but dropped out to lead the next Bourne.
“Emma is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity, and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to ‘The Circle,’” Ponsoldt said in a statement.
Watson, known for the Harry Potter series, has appeared in a number of films since, including Noah, The Bling Ring, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She’s currently in production on Disney’s live-action Beauty and The Beast, where she stars as Belle alongside Dan Stevens and Luke Evans. Up next, she’ll appear in the Ethan Hawke cult thriller Regression and opposite Daniel Brühl in the political thriller Colonia.
