Ilene Chaiken has signed a deal with 20th Television, which will last two years, with an option open for a third. This deal will allow Chaiken to develop new content for the studio, while continuing to helm the massive hit series Empire. The ratings of the series throughout the first season managed to increase every week, which is highly unusual for a television series. Chaiken has also created the hit series The L Word.
In response to the deal with Chaiken, 20th TV creative affairs president Jonnie Davis remarked,
Ilene is about as gifted a showrunner as there is in this business, and we could not be happier that she has made this studio her home. This deal not only keeps her at the helm of the monster hit Empire, on which she has done extraordinary work delivering episode after brilliant episode, but also allows us to develop future projects with her.”
