Juliette Binoche has signed on to star as Pearl S. Buck in the biopic PEARL. The film follows the true story of Pearl S. Buck, who spent most of her life in China, first as a missionary and later as a novelist who started writing to support her mentally challenged daughter in a special school. Roxanne Messina Captor has written the screenplay, which she will also direct. Captor has been working on the screenplay since 2009, and has cited Buck’s memoirs as an inspiration. The film was set into motion in 2012, with the China Film Group coming on to the project.
Known for her roles in The English Patient and Three Colors: Blue and Dan In Real Life, Binoche was seen in the 2014 blockbuster Godzilla as Sandra Brody.
