Ben Stiller and his Red Hour Films have picked up the buzzy action-comedy spec THE SET UP from rising comedy writer Kari Granlund. Ben Stiller, Stuart Cornfeld and Nicky Weinstock are producing through Red Hour, which has an overall financing deal with Bold Films.
The script is described as a hilarious, high-speed action-comedy about two codependent female best friends whose friendship is put through the wringer after a blind date gone awry sends them on a dangerous, all-in-one-night adventure with a drug dealer. With a psychotic drug lord and a gang of criminals hot on their heels, the girls must navigate their way through car chases, gun fights, and the pains of growing up.
Last month, the ink dried on a pact between Stiller’s Red Hour and Bold Films after Red Hour’s longstanding first-look deal with Fox expired. In addition to the new arrangement, Red Hour brought Weinstock on board to help expand the shingle’s television and film slate, as well as its digital media presence. The extent to which Bold will be involved in the development of Granlund’s The Set Up is unclear, outside of their overall financial backing of Red Hour.
Granlund, who is quickly making a name for herself amongst the industry’s up-and-coming screenwriters, recently landed on both the 2014 Young & Hungry List and the 2014 Hit List. Her Hit List spec Wedding For One was picked up by Radar Pictures, and is currently in development with Ted Field producing.
