〉 Reitman joins forces with Anonymous and Foundry Media to bring Foster’s “subversive” new YA series to the big screen.

has snagged the rights the ’s forthcoming YA novel , an action-adventure tale from Harper Collins that is set to hit bookshelves in October of 2016. Anonymous’s will produce alongside Ghostbusters producer and his and Foundry Media & Literary. will oversee for Anonymous.

The begins in the wilderness outside of Portland, Oregon, where a rift has opened and connected Earth to the multiverse. A group of militarized teens known as The Citadels must protect humankind from hostile creatures that spew forth from the mysterious portal.

The first installment of ’s subversive science fiction trilogy, known as The Rift Uprising Trilogy, follows Ryn and her fellow soldiers as they’re forced to balance teenage hormones with saving the world, only to discover that the real enemy may not be otherworldly at all.

The falls squarely in line with other female-driven YA , including The Hunger Games and January’s The 5th Wave, however the subversive element to Foster’s has been emphasized, suggesting that Rift could be angling to play off of familiar tropes of its predecessors. While franchises like Maze Runner and Divergent are still anticipating big numbers from upcoming installments, the genre in general has started to move away from love triangles and romantic subplots that dominated narratives in the past as its audience’s tastes mature. In this sense, The Rift may serve as a response to the staleness that has started to descend on comparable properties.

Foster, who began her career writing spoken word poetry eventually evolved into a successful songwriter, penning lyrics for names like Michael Buble – not surprising, given that her father is legendary music producer David Foster. Her first work of fiction, When Autumn Leaves, was published in 2009.

Anonymous’s production efforts include the upcoming Triple 9, starring Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor, as well as an adaptation of the blog-turned-book 40 Days of Dating.

Reitman, who directed and produced the Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, is also serving as a producer on Sony’s upcoming reboot starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. His Montecito shingle has a slew of films in , including the family fantasy A Babysitter’s Guide to Monsters and the caper comedy I Would Only Rob Banks For My Family, but The Rift stands as the only true science fiction YA venture in the company’.

Foster is repped by Foundry’s , with handling the film rights.
