〉 Saldana is attached to produce the feature adaptation of Mary Kubica’s thriller through her Cinestar Pictures.
Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldana and her Cinestar Pictures shingle are attached to produce PRETTY BABY, based on New York Times best-selling author Mary Kubica‘s hypnotic psychological thriller. Pretty Baby, the follow up to Kubica’s hit suspense novel The Good Girl, was published by MIRA in July of 2015. The rights to Pretty Baby are still available, as Cinestar is looking to partner on the project.
The story is centered on Heidi Wood, who has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit, takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family’s objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.
Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow’s past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she’s willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.
With the massive success of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, there’s been a feeding frenzy as of late on dark, psychological thrillers that have smartly executed, unexpected twists that even the savviest audiences don’t see coming. Pretty Baby is no exception, drawing favorable comparisons to classic thrillers like Single White Female and The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and the protagonist at the center could be the perfect role for Saldana – though whether she will star has not been confirmed.
Saldana is currently in production with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, after which she will move on to filming the three sequels to James Cameron’s global blockbuster Avatar, which are scheduled to shoot back-to-back over the next two years. She can next be seen in Star Trek Beyond.
Saldana’s production company Cinestar is currently in development with Hell or High Water, based on the novel by Joy Castro. The company recently made a digital production deal with Awestruck, which will see the companies team up to create two series and a YouTube channel.
Kubica’s next novel, Don’t You Cry, is set to hit bookshelves in May, 2016. Pretty Baby is repped by Rachel Dillon Fried of Sanford J. Greenburger Associates with ICM Partners’ Rich Green handling the TV and film rights.
