We’re hearing that Michael Cooney’s newest spec, IN THE DARK, has gone into a select group of big name producers around town. Though the logline is currently being kept under wraps, the psychological thriller has been pitched as being in a vein of Sleeping with the Enemy meets Gone Girl and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Cooney is repped by Keya Khayatian at UTA. Bobby Sabelhaus of FilmHaus and John Zaozirny of Bellevue Productions are producing the project.
During an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Cooney told an anecdote about how this latest thriller got its title:
[My daughter] came up with such a simple, perfect title for the new one. It’s called In The Dark. Of course she’s asking for 10% and we’ll negotiate on that.
The writer/director/producer has a strong background in the thriller/horror genre. Cooney is the writer behind 6 Souls. Starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, the thriller follows a female forensic psychiatrist (Moore) who discovers that all of one of her patient’s multiple personalities are actually murder victims. He also wrote Columbia Pictures’ Identity, a tense, contained thriller about 10 strangers who are stranded in a desolate Nevada motel during a vicious rainstorm.
Cooney is keeping busy on the TV front as well. He is the creator and writer behind the new Fox pilot Runner. The female-driven project, based on the Turkish series Son, centers on Lauren Marks, a woman who discovers that her husband is actually an arms dealer and whose search for answers embroils her in the U.S./Mexico conflict over weapons and terrorism.
