Kerry Washington is teaming up with Red Granite Pictures and Broken Road Productions to produce and star in the thriller RUN, from a script by Non-Stop writers Chris Roach and John Richardson. Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein are producing for Broken Road, with Riza Aziz’s Red Granite handling sales.
Pitched as a female-driven Safe House, the story is centered around Washington’s character, whose husband has a top secret job–one which requires her to be kept on a strictly need to know basis. Early on in their relationship, he warns her that if there’s ever a day on which she receives a text that simply says ‘run’, to drop everything and go. That day finally comes.
Washington, who currently stars as Olivia Pope on ABC’s mega-hit Scandal, has been carefully planning her move into features for some time. However, since landing a supporting role in 2012’s Django Unchained, she’s been fairly quiet on the features front. If producers are successful in getting Run off the ground, the role is one that could prove to be Washington’s big screen breakout. Producers are currently meeting with directors, and aiming for a Spring 2016 shoot date to coincide with Washington’s hiatus from Shondaville.
Aside from her weekly work on Scandal, which just began its fifth season, Washington will appear in HBO’s upcoming movie Confirmation as Clarence Thomas’s embattled secretary Anita Hill. In addition, Washington has a second project in the early stages of development with Broken Road’s Garner, the romantic comedy Is He The One.
