Michael De Luca and Legendary Entertainment are teaming up to produce the sci-fi thriller REMINISCENCE at Universal Pictures. Elishia Holmes and De Luca have come on board to produce through his Michael De Luca Productions, which signed a first-look deal with Universal in April. Alex Hedlund will oversee for Legendary–which has a distribution deal with the studio. The original script is from Lisa Joy.
The story revolves around Nick Bannister, who, in a Blade Runner-esque Manhattan, is a futuristic “archaeologist” who helps clients relive and often get lost in their happiest memories. But when one of his client’s memories holds clues that implicate a wealthy and powerful family in drug trafficking and murder, Nick finds himself on the run to unravel a series of mysterious crimes which continually lead back to the very woman he loves.
The script, which landed on the 2013 Hit List as well as the 2013 Black List, has elements of Minority Report and Inception–thematically similar to the work from Joy’s husband, Jonathan Nolan. The spec sold to Legendary for a low seven-figures after a fierce bidding war. It has been in development ever since, but De Luca’s attachment has injected new life into the project.
Joy, a former writer for Pushing Daisies and Burn Notice, is a co-creator of the upcoming HBO sci-fi series Westworld–based on the Michael Crichton film of the same name. She’s also in development with Athena, a series based on her graphic novel, and an as-of-yet untitled ‘Female Superhero Spider-Man Movie’.
De Luca’s most recent smash-success, Fifty Shades of Grey, has him busy with the sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. Other projects in development include the Darren Aronofsky-directed Evel Knievel biopic, and the children’s adventure story The Explorer’s Club.
De Luca and his team are currently looking for the right director to fully realize Reminiscence.
